About:
HPV or Human Papillomavirus Infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, according to the CDC. About 79 million Americans are currently infected and about 14 million people become newly infected each year. It easily spreads from sexual skin-to-skin contact with someone who has it. Most people who are sexually active, will get it at some point in their lives, without even knowing, as symptoms often can go unnoticed. For people that have HPV, it can result in deadly cancers including cervical, neck and head cancer.
Each year, 12,000 women living in the US will be diagnosed with cervical cancer due to HPV. 1/3 (or 4,000 women) will die from cervical cancer, even with screening and treatment. There are other cancers caused by HPV that occur in the US as well which affects approximately 19,400 women and 12,000 men.
Prevention:
The best prevention method is to get vaccinated. The HPV vaccine (Gardasil) has been proven to be safe and effective. It can protect against the disease itself as well as cancers that are caused by HPV. Currently, there is no cure.
